After vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s numbers began to collapse, we wanted to incorporate her into our closing argument – but we needed the reference to be substantive, not personal; about McCain’s judgment, not Palin’s qualifications.
The economy had become the dominant issue of the campaign, and two of McCain’s comments – one about his lack of economic expertise, the other about how he’d empower his vice president on those matters – gave us the opening we needed.
