We knew the final ad of the Iowa campaign would set the mood and define the choice as caucus-goers headed out to vote. We needed to set ourselves apart, while not alienating those caucus-goers who – by dint of the complex rules governing the Iowa Caucus – might shift to Obama in the “second round” of voting.
The ad needed to reprise the campaign’s “first principles” – a willingness to say what was politically unpopular; a commitment to standing up to special interests; and an ability to unite the country.
